A Night at the Roxbury is yet another in a long line of feature-length Saturday Night Live sketches. Sure, watching Doug and Steve Butabi (Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell) continuously strike out with every woman in every club in the country can bring in a few laughs when it lasts five minutes. But could it possibly be funny for ninety whole minutes?
Surprisingly enough, yes.
The two club kings (Are they brothers? No… Yes!) get sick of being rejected at every club in town, and they start planning to open their own club – where they’ll never get rejected. Following a run-in with Richard Grieco (he just didn’t want to get sued), the two of them get into the Roxbury and meet the owner, who’s interested in their suggestions.
But after Doug and Steve blame each other for losing their hottie girlfriends, they decide to go their separate ways. Doug moves into the guesthouse and tries to find a new clubbin’ partner. Steve begins a relationship with Emily Sanderson (Molly Shannon – who, in my eyes, what the low point of the movie).
But can something actually keep the two apart?
Something actually possessed me to go and see this one in the theater. And I loved it so much that I went out and bought my very own copy. Although it will most likely never be considered a classic, it’s a great brainless flick with an endless number of one-liners that are so stupid that they’re hilarious.
