It’s the moment everyone fears –- the first time they meet their boyfriend or girlfriend’s parents. They’re tense. They’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. They get that nervous giggle. And they talk too much and make up stories to appear a better catch than they really are.
For Greg Focker, meeting his girlfriend’s parents is a nightmare.
Ben Stiller plays Greg, a man who’s about to spend the weekend with his arch nemesis –- his girlfriend’s overprotective dad. A former CIA spy hunter who’s been posing as a rare flower specialist, Jack Byrnes (played by Robert De Niro) has the house full of hidden cameras. He’s got his eye on Greg –- and he doesn’t trust him one bit.
To make matters even worse, Greg can’t seem to do anything right -– and the harder he tries, the worse things get. He always says exactly the wrong thing. He gets caught in bizarre lies. He spills Jack’s mother’s remains all over the dining room floor. He loses Jack’s cat. And that’s only the beginning.
Greg’s chances for winning Jack over -– and getting his permission to propose to Pam (Teri Polo) –- just keep getting slimmer.
Meet the Parents is a painfully hilarious movie -– it’s every anxious boyfriend’s nightmare-on-film. Stiller’s not bad (though, after I while, I stopped feeling sorry for his character and started wanting to kick him), but De Niro is excellent –- terrifying, but so very funny.
