The Usual Suspects is an action-packed thriller loaded with graphic violence (there's blood, guts, and gore everywhere), a great story, and some of the finest acting I have ever seen. And, of course, the surprise ending.
The movie begins in a police briefing room, where Kevin Spacey, playing a clubfooted con man, recounts how Hungarian thug Keyser Soze and his cohorts plotted to steal a large shipment of cocaine. We are shown, via flashbacks, how the heist was pulled off.
The cast includes Spacey (who won an Oscar for this performance), Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Dan Hedaya, Pete Postlethwaite, Kevin Pollak, Benicio Del Toro, and Chazz Palmintieri (as the investigating detective).
Much has been said about the ending of The Usual Suspects, and it has strong numbers in both camps -- those who love the ending and those who hate it. If you like to analyse your movies and have them be predictable and logical, maybe this one isn't for you. But if you are looking for a riveting story, flawless acting, and a twisted plot, then you'll be highly entertained by The Usual Suspects.
