Finally, the rumored Rage Against the Machine and Chris Cornell collaboration is out; the band’s name is Audioslave. However, it didn’t come without some adversity. Chris Cornell left the band for a couple of months, there were previous contract issues, they had to pull out of Ozzfest, and demos were leaked to the Internet. The wait for the CD is now over, and it was well worth it.

Although Audioslave has the three remaining members of RATM, the overall sound of this CD might disappoint those hardcore fans; Soundgarden fans will love it. The lyrics are not as political, and the musical sound is closer to that of Cornell’s former band, Soundgarden.

Chris Cornell brought the deep, dark, lyrical stylings that he was famous for with Soundgarden. When asked about the political lyrics in the December 2002 Guitar World, guitarist Tom Morello stated “I think it’s crucial that a lyricist write from his soul.” That is exactly what Cornell does. “Set it Off,” “Exploder,” and “Show Me How to Live” are a few songs that demonstrate this beautifully.

The musical element of this album still has the innovative guitar work of Tom Morello, compounded with the driving bass lines of Tim Commerford and the tight drum rhythms of Brad Wilk. However, they do show the other side of their musical talent.

The work that came from these musicians is very unexpected. “Getaway Car” has a nice slow blues feel to it. The solo displays the musicianship of Tom Morello, who is known for playing rap-rock. “I am the Highway” has a classic rock feel to it. “What You Are” has an overall dark feel, similar to that of the grunge era in Seattle.

People have told me that it is hard to imagine these four guys playing together. Once the first track, “Cochise,” rocks past, the feeling that these guys belong together shines through.
