Everything goes exactly as planned when Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) and
his crew pull a $35 million heist in Venice—until inside man, Steve (Edward Norton),
decides to take the millions in gold bars for himself.
A year later,
Charlie’s hunted Steve down, and Charlie and the rest of the crew are ready to get the
gold back. But to do that, Charlie’s got to convince expert safecracker Stella (Charlize
Theron) to do the job. What follows is a blur of planning and re-planning and high-speed
car chases (both above and below ground) with a small fleet of Minis.
In
fact, this movie takes my award for Best High-Speed Car Chase Involving Minis (bumping The Man Who Knew Too
Little into the number two position).
The Italian Job was
brilliantly written. It’s smart, suspenseful, and witty. In fact, it’s sometimes even
hilarious—thanks, especially, to Lyle (Seth Green), the crew’s computer genius, who
declares (repeatedly) that he’s the real creator of Napster. The cast—Theron,
Green, and even Wahlberg (who, in my mind, will forever be Marky Mark)—is spectacular.
And the action is even better. Don’t even waste the extra money on a rental—just go out
and buy it.
