Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore star in this romantic
comedy about a pair of rivals who accidentally get married…
Audrey Woods
(Moore) is one of New York’s most sought-after divorce lawyers. She’s straight-laced and
tough and cynical, and she gets the job done—she’s never lost a case. But then Daniel
Rafferty (Brosnan) shows up. He’s crazy and unorthodox and, much to Audrey’s dismay,
he’s good—so good that he manages both to get her drunk enough for a one-night stand and
to beat her the next morning in court.
From then on, it’s war. The two
violently battle each other in court, and Audrey despises Daniel—despite the fact that
he’s still obviously attracted to her. But then they land the big case—a rock
star and his fashion designer wife. The rivals end up at the couple’s castle in Ireland,
where, during a local festival, they have a few too many drinks and wake up the next
morning to find that they got married. Audrey decides to keep things quiet, but that’s
no longer an option when the story winds up on The New York Times’ gossip column,
Page Six. For appearances’ sake, the couple acts like a normal married
couple—even though they’re fighting against each other in court—and Daniel moves into
Audrey’s guest room. Once the case is over, they’ll go their separate ways—or will
they?
Laws of Attraction features pretty much every cliché in the
romantic comedy book—which is a bit disappointing though not really surprising. The
conclusion is pretty predictable, too. But if you can overlook all that (and really…it’s
a romantic comedy…don’t you expect clichés and predictability?), you’ll enjoy
Laws of Attraction. Brosnan and Moore work well together, and the story is
cute—and even amusing. It’s not the best romantic comedy I’ve seen, but it’s not bad,
either. I found it to be a great way to pass the time on a long flight overseas… So if
you’re looking for a chick flick to pass the time on a Friday night, give it a shot.
