When I first added my name to my library’s reserve
list for Songs About Jane, I was the eighteenth in line, and I was totally
enamored with Maroon 5’s singles, “This Love” and (especially) “Harder to Breathe.” But
by the time I got to the top of the list, I had heard their latest single, “She Will Be
Loved,” a few too many times, and I wasn’t so sure that I actually wanted to listen to
the CD anymore. But I went to the library and picked it up anyway—and it hasn’t left my
CD player since.
If you like Maroon 5’s song, “Harder to Breathe,” you’ll
love the entire album. The song’s catchy groove sets the stage for the entire danceable
album. If you’re hooked on “She Will Be Loved,” however, you may be disappointed. You
won’t find a lot of slow, sweet, sappy songs here.
Songs About
Jane is strong and seductive, with funky undertones. While I’ll admit that there are
a few songs that sound just a little bit Justin-Timberlake-y at times, there are others
that are loungey-funky, like a ‘70s TV theme song (especially “Sunday Morning,” which is
one of my favorites). And it’s that variety that makes the album fun—and well worth
adding to your collection.
