In the world of comedy, many young performers pale in comparison to Jo Koy’s rising star. His new Comedy Central special, Jo Koy: Don’t Make Him Angry is executed almost flawlessly, and the comedian’s punch lines are simply laugh-out-loud hilarious at every step of the way.
While his jokes may be punctuated by swearing and sexual overtones, these elements aren’t overused for repeated attempts at shock and surprise, as they often are with some comics. It’s refreshing to see a comedian who doesn’t need to rely on line after line of offensive language to get his laughs. Instead, Koy rides above that wave of humor; he’s talented and confident enough to execute a joke with his animated and engaging storytelling.
Jo’s impressions are entertaining, and his jokes about living in America are very amusing, but his stories about his family and his personal life are the parts of the show that really shine. They’re stories that are so incredibly personal, yet they’re just too funny to be kept private. From his tales of growing up to becoming a father, Jo will have you either nodding your head in agreement, laughing in disbelief, or both as he shares his life experiences.
In addition to the DVD’s excellent feature content, the bonus features are some of the best that Comedy Central has ever compiled on a DVD. There’s a ton of extra content, all of which is worth watching. In addition to some bonus material from another Comedy Central show, there are also a number of interviews, which are particularly interesting. Though a few of the jokes do repeat, there are plenty of others that are just as funny as those found in main DVD content.
So what’s the only problem with this DVD? It’s just too darn short. The show is just 43 minutes long, and there’s not quite as much material as you might expect. I can only hope that Jo’s next show will be a little longer winded. In the meantime, however, his natural ability simply to tell a good story makes Don’t Make Him Angry worth watching again and again. It’s a must-have for any DVD collection.
