During his 2006 Something to Be tour, Rob Thomas performed for thousands of fans live at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, one of the most beautiful places in Colorado, and the entire performance is captured on Live at Red Rocks, his first live concert DVD. His engaging smile—full of warmth and wonder—and tremendously talented voice draws the audience in and keeps them enthralled for the duration of the show.
With an uncommon and unmatched sound, he stands out from other rock artists. In short, the super-talented Thomas has a true gift, and he simply cannot sing a bad song—or even a mediocre song. Everything that comes out of his mouth is breathtaking.
Without a lot of show gimmicks, just a non-intrusive light show, he steps out on the stage and promises to sing as many songs as he can before they kick him off the stage. His intent is to celebrate life with everyone around him—and what better way than to do that with music? He reaches into your thoughts and extracts everything you’ve ever felt and puts it to music. I can guarantee that one of his songs will touch on some aspect of your life, and you’ll feel it down to your soul. He’s not afraid to sing about deep, buried feelings that everyone tries to hide from the world, and, as a result, everything he puts to music is real, not filtered and reprocessed.
Performing many of his hits—both from his solo career and from Matchbox Twenty—he keeps the audience shrieking for more. Among his best are “If You’re Gone,” “3 AM (subdued version),” “Bent,” “Lonely No More,” “Smooth (special acoustic arrangement),” and a spectacular version of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.” It’s a song I’ve never particularly liked, but I absolutely loved the way Rob Thomas performed it with such passion.
If I’m not careful, I’ll start gushing like a schoolgirl—but he’s just that good. Every single song on Live at Red Rocks is worth listening to. And Thomas is so amazing on stage that I didn’t even mind the roar of the crowd. In fact, a few times, I even forgot that they were there.
If you love Rob Thomas’s music as much as I do, you’re going to want to pick up a copy of Something to Be Tour—Live at Red Rocks. It’s a rare treasure that you’ll want to watch again and again. I know I will.
