Lately, it seems as though kids’ entertainment is getting darker and darker. After all, some of the latest kids movies have been about witches and zombies and an undead dog. If your kids need a break from the latest creepy cartoons, though, you can find the exact opposite in the latest fun and fluffy My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic collection, Adventures in the Crystal Empire.

In the two-part feature episode, “The Crystal Empire,” Princess Celestia (Nicole Oliver) summons Twilight Sparkle (Tara Strong) for an important test. The mysterious Crystal Empire has returned after being missing for a thousand years, and Twilight and her friends must help to protect it from the evil king who cursed it years ago. Though Twilight’s confidence sometimes fails her, her friends stand by her, always happy to help.

The disc also includes three additional episodes of the cult favorite series. “Sonic Rainboom” finds Rainbow Dash anxiously preparing for an important competition. “Luna Eclipsed” is a Halloween episode that follows the ponies as they collect candy on Nightmare Night. And, in “It’s About Time,” Twilight learns a very important lesson about worrying.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is the perfect antidote to the recent run of animated adventures filled with ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night. Of course, that’s not to say that these five episodes don’t have their share of scary parts. After all, they feature an evil king and a scary princess who threatens to gobble up ponies who don’t give her candy on Nightmare Night. Still, this collection focuses on the fun-loving characters—each with her own gifts and talents and unique personality.

In this collection of episodes, the characters discover that each one of them is special. Whether her talent involves music or math or art or something else, each pony gets her time to shine. And when they all work together, they can accomplish amazing things.

Meanwhile, each episode teaches a valuable lesson about friendship. Kids will learn about the importance of standing by their friends and accepting others—even if they’re different. Sure, the stories and their morals are often sugary sweet, but the colorful characters and equally colorful animation—along with those super-sweet lessons about friendship and acceptance—make this adorable show just the thing for young viewers.

So if your little one has had her fill of vampires and zombies, pick up this cute collection filled with friendly young fillies. She’ll love the characters—and she’ll learn some important lessons, too.
