It’s been 14 years since Brad Bird introduced audiences to The Incredibles. And though it took a long time to bring this lovable family of supers back to theaters, their return is the entertaining and action-packed sequel that fans have been waiting to see.
Incredibles 2 picks up where the original left off: as the Parr family works together to battle the city’s latest threat. But things don’t go as planned, and superheroes are once again blamed for the damage and destruction caused by the battle. One person who doesn’t want to do away with supers is Winston Deavor (voiced by Bob Odenkirk), a wealthy businessman who has a plan to make them legal again—with help from Elastigirl (Holly Hunter). So while Elastigirl sets out on a mission to save supers, Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) takes over her tasks at home.
Just like the first Incredibles, the sequel has a cool, retro style and plenty of superhero action. But that’s not really why audiences love this super family; we love them because, despite their super powers, they’re a real family. Sure, they can go out there and save the world from villainous plots, but they also deal with boys and homework and managing a family. And that’s what once again makes the follow-up so entertaining—because the characters are relatable and just plain lovable.
This may be seem like just a fun-filled animated adventure for kids, but Pixar is never really satisfied to talk just to kids. And Incredibles 2 has so much to say to grown-ups—about the challenges of parenting, the roles of moms and dads, and the struggle to find our place as adults. Kids may love the action and humor of it, but parents will connect with it on a completely different level.
Here, Elastigirl gets her chance to shine—to use her powers to save the world. But the real star of the show is Jack-Jack, the adorable baby with a whole host of over-the-top powers. His developing abilities definitely keep his new stay-at-home dad on his toes—and just when things get tense or scary, the baby does something adorably hilarious to bring back the laughs.
Meanwhile, it’s all put together in a fun and familiar package. Pixar’s animation has definitely come a long way in 14 years. With each new release, the studio has come up with new techniques to show more detail than before. But while the animation here is stunning, the team chose to stay true to the original character designs—just as they stayed true to the story and the personalities. Instead of giving the family a fancy, high-tech makeover, they’re the same lovably cartoony characters that they were before. And that’s exactly how it should be.
Incredibles 2 isn’t the tear-jerking tale that many Pixar movies are, but it’s smart and sophisticated in its own way—and it’s just a whole lot of family fun. If your family loves the original, you won’t be disappointed by the sequel.
