Stories are often told of the limitless strength and determination of a woman who’s fighting for her children or grandchildren—even going so far as to lift a car to save a loved one. And in Let Him Go, one resolute grandmother is determined to save the little boy who means everything to her.

Let Him Go stars Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as George and Margaret Blackledge, a grieving couple whose son was killed after being thrown from a horse at their home in Montana. When his widow, Lorna (Kayli Carter), later remarries and moves out with their grandson, Margaret is heartbroken—and her suspicions about Lorna’s new husband are confirmed when she witnesses his abusive behavior. So when the young family disappears suddenly—seemingly to return to his family in North Dakota—Margaret is determined to find them and bring her grandson back to safety.

As George and Margaret climb into their old wagon and hit the open road through the plains and valleys and small towns of 1960s Montana, the scenery may be striking and serene, but there’s a very real sense of foreboding building for the couple. While George just wants to give Margaret a chance to say goodbye, Margaret is preparing for a fight. And when they learn more about the family they’re going to meet, they realize that their chances of a calm, civil discussion are slim.

At the center of this drama and suspense are the women. Lorna is a loving mom who’s trying to do her best to protect and care for her son, but it’s also clear that she’s can’t do it on her own. So the battle comes down to the grandmothers: to loving, devoted Margaret and Lesley Manville’s Blanche Weboy, a ruthless and controlling woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

But it’s Diane Lane’s remarkable performance as Margaret that truly stands out. She’s far from perfect—especially to her daughter-in-law—but her heart is in the right place. And though she’s certainly a strong character, her passion, her dedication, and her story of endurance in spite of loss will bring viewers to tears time and time again throughout her journey.

Let Him Go is a compelling film—a mix of tense Western, taut thriller, and heartbreaking family drama. It isn’t a fast-paced action movie, but it’s a beautiful story about a mother’s (or grandmother’s) unwavering love.
