This time of year is full of adventures for families: school vacations, holidays, visits to family and friends. But if your family needs a little extra adventure this holiday season, you can find it at your local theater with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish finds the legendary outlaw (voiced by Antonio Banderas) struggling with a new stage in his life. After going through eight of his nine lives, he’s settled down at an old lady’s cat rescue, where he’s absolutely miserable. But then he hears about a special wishing star that holds one final wish. And as other fairy tale characters race to find the star, Puss joins with Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and a relentlessly upbeat little dog (Harvey Guillén) to find the star and use the wish to get his lives back.
As this unlikely trio of star-hunters battles to control the magical map that will lead them to the wishing star, they encounter all kinds of challenges along the way—mostly in the form of other characters who want the wish for themselves. The films in the Shrek universe often have some characters that work and some that don’t, and this one is no exception. Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and her adoptive bear family make a lovable band of criminals, while Big Jack Horner (John Mulaney) is big and greedy and ruthless and almost creepy enough to give kids nightmares. But viewers will fall in love with Puss and Kitty’s canine companion, whose sad back story and endless optimism just make this tiny pup that much more adorable.
The characters and their story often feel more than a little bit random, but the film is filled with action and laughs—with plenty of little inside gags for grown-up viewers. And the animation is every bit as colorful and imaginative as the typical DreamWorks adventure, using a variety of animation styles to keep things visually interesting. This isn’t exactly a smart, sophisticated movie for kids. It’s silly and irreverent, with a whole lot of wacky references to your favorite fairy tales—an entertaining return to this magical land.
With its (mostly) likable characters and its fairy tale action, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is just what you’d expect from a new film from this infamous feline. So if you’re looking to get out of the house for some family-friendly entertainment over the winter break, the kids are sure to enjoy this funny and fun-filled adventure.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish arrives in theaters on December 21, 2022—just in time for winter break family viewing.
