For more than 40 years, adventure-loving movie buffs have enjoyed following a gruff but daring archeologist on his continuing quests to battle Nazis and protect ancient artifacts. And in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the beloved hero brings his story to a fitting conclusion.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny finds Dr. Henry Jones (Harrison Ford) at the end of his academic career. But he’s marking his retirement alone, as the loss of his son broke up his marriage to Marion (Karen Allen). When his old friend’s daughter, Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) approaches him for help in recovering the Dial of Archimedes, Indy isn’t interested in another adventure—until a man from his past steals the Dial, causing chaos in his wake. And when Indy finds himself wanted for murder, he sets off to save the Dial and clear his name.
As Indy packs his hat and his whip and races off for another globe-trotting adventure, he enlists the help of a number of old friends along the way. Though the old archeologist may be slowing down a bit in his old age, he still ends up deep-sea diving and jumping from planes and cracking codes to search for the final resting place of the ancient mathematician who crafted the Dial centuries early. And while Helena definitely isn’t Marion—and she isn’t always an especially likable character—Phoebe Waller-Bridge does a good job of facing off against her gruff costar.
Really, though, the best part of the film is the strong sense of nostalgia that fans will feel watching Indy take off on one last mission. It just feels like a classic Indiana Jones movie—with its exotic locations and wild adventures and villains who are just downright evil. It doesn’t feel forced or just plain depressing—like a star trying to recapture his glory days by returning to a beloved character. Harrison Ford is still the same Indy that fans have always loved—just a little older. And after the mess of 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it’s a relief to see the fifth film return to the franchise’s roots—to give the series a fitting finale.
With its action and adventure, its puzzles and peril, and, of course, its Nazi-fighting hero, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the same old Indiana Jones movie: a fun-filled adventure that makes for a worthy conclusion to a beloved franchise.
You can join Harrison Ford on his last adventure as Indy when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny races into theaters on June 30, 2023.
