Anyone who’s ever watched a time-traveling movie knows that traveling into the past comes with some serious rules. But in the comedy Relax, I’m from the Future, one time traveler tries his best to play by the rules, but he still causes all kinds of time-traveling commotion.

Relax, I’m from the Future begins as Casper (Rhys Darby) arrives in Toronto through a kind of portal from the future. As he’s trying to get his bearings in this new environment, he meets Holly (Gabrielle Graham), a cynical young woman who laughs off his stories—until he starts offering proof in the form of things like winning lottery numbers and sports facts. Together with Holly, Casper starts working on his mysterious plan—until a kind of time cop from the future (Janine Theriault) catches up to him.

As Holly begins making money on sports betting and lottery winnings, Casper tries to keep a low profile, taking up residence in an underground bunker in the middle of nowhere and talking only with people who are about to die. It’s all a part of his plan—though no one really knows what that plan is.

Still, Casper is a lovable character—an already eccentric guy whose appearance from another time just makes him even quirkier. He knows who’s going to win every sports championship for the next 20 years, and he knows a whole lot of details about the life and death of a man who works at a local diner. But he also seems unexpectedly bumbling—and surprisingly low-tech—for someone who’s managed to travel through time.

Of course, though Casper claims that time travel doesn’t come with any real consequences—and no matter how carefully he works to stay off the grid while implementing his important plan—everything eventually spirals into a whole lot of comical time-traveling chaos. No time travel story can be entirely simple and straightforward—and when Casper can’t help but interfere in an important event in history, things get messy and complicated. At times, it’s enough to make your head spin—just a little bit—but as the story gets stranger and more complex, it also makes for some wild and ridiculous sci-fi comedy.

Though its growing silliness and general time-traveling pandemonium make Relax, I’m from the Future an entertaining comedy, its charming star—along with the rest of this cast of eccentric characters—give it the additional likability that makes it worth watching.

You can join Casper on his mission when Relax, I’m from the Future arrives in theaters on September 22, 2023.
