We all have those days when everything seems to go wrong—when we spill our coffee and get stuck in traffic and forget an important appointment all in the same day. And in Notice to Quit, one man’s bad day is disrupted by an unexpected visit from his headstrong young daughter.

Notice to Quit finds starving actor turned struggling New York City realtor Andy Singer (Michael Zegen) trying (but failing) to make ends meet in any way possible. No one wants to rent any of the tiny, rundown apartments that he has available, so he’s resorted to selling off used appliances from vacated apartments. And just as he arrives home to find his landlord with an eviction notice in hand, Andy gets a visit from his estranged 10-year-old daughter, Anna (Kasey Bella Suarez), who’s not happy about her upcoming move to Florida with her mom.

Anna really wants her dad to take her to the zoo, but Andy has a lot of work to do—so she happily tags along as he slogs through the sweltering city streets and shows an old apartment to a series of uninterested clients. She may be a little girl, but Anna is smart and resourceful—much more resourceful than her unscrupulous dad, in fact—and as the day spirals into chaos, she manages to help her dad out of one messy situation after another.

While Anna is incredibly lovable, though, her dad doesn’t fare as well. Andy’s struggle to make ends meet may be relatable, but he’s just not a likable guy. He’s an awkwardly shady character who’s resorted to illegal activity and small-time scams to try to make a buck. Not only did his financial challenges lead him to lose custody of his daughter, but he apparently hasn’t even put forth the effort to spend time with her. Though there are moments in the film that are supposed to offer a glimmer of hope—to suggest that Andy desperately wants Anna in his life—he spends most of the time treating her like an inconvenience. And though he seems to grow a bit throughout this chaotic day with his daughter, it’s hard to believe that it’ll really make a difference in the end.

Throughout this wild and chaotic father-daughter adventure, the young star definitely shines. But the clever kid’s generally unlikable and irresponsible dad can make Notice to Quit a frustrating film.

You can join this father and daughter on their chaotic day when Notice to Quit arrives in theaters on September 27, 2024.
