Time-traveling stories range from serious to silly—from science-fiction to romance. And in the time-bending young adult novel Remember Me Tomorrow by Farah Heron, two characters from different points in time find themselves working together to try to solve a mystery before time runs out for one of them.

The story moves into a new dorm room with Aleeza Kassam after a friendship-ending argument with her roommate. Aleeza is relieved to find an open room on campus—until she discovers that it formerly belonged to Jay Hoque, who disappeared from his room five months ago and hasn’t been seen since. The mystery gets even stranger when Aleeza begins getting texts from Jay through the dorm’s communication app—from the weeks before his disappearance. And as Aleeza communicates with the Jay of the past, they try to work together to prevent his disappearance.

Aleeza doesn’t understand what’s happening—or how it’s even possible. She doesn’t know if she’s communicating with the Jay from the past or maybe some different Jay from a completely different timeline. But she knows that she needs to try to keep him safe from whatever happened to him—even if it messes up time. And as Aleeza interviews some of the school’s richest and most suspicious students and compares notes with her roommate from another time, the author skillfully blends mystery with science-fiction and even a little bit of budding romance to put the pieces together.

There’s so much at play in this fascinating puzzle of a story. Before she met Jay, Aleeza was just a lonely kid who’d walked away from her only friend. But once she and Jay begin communicating—and once she starts looking into his disappearance—she suddenly finds herself in the middle of an exciting (and urgent) investigation with a bunch of new friends. And though it could all be incredibly confusing, the author writes it in a way that’s clever and captivating yet still light and entertaining, too. Readers will fall in love with Aleeza and Jay while getting pulled into their story of mystery and romance and late-night time-travel movie-watching. It’s just the kind of novel that you’ll struggle to put down at the end of the day because you just need to know how it all ends.

While time-travel stories can be maddeningly messy, that’s not the case for Remember Me Tomorrow. It’s an enchanting young adult read that will keep you guessing until the end.
