Spy thrillers generally follow seasoned agents as they travel the globe, racing to stop important information from getting into the wrong hands. But Inheritance puts a critical mission in the hands of the daughter of a spy—a young woman who isn’t even sure which side her father is on.
Inheritance stars Phoebe Dynevor as Maya, a young New Yorker who’s spent the last nine months caring for her ailing mother. When her estranged father, Sam (Rhys Ifans), shows up for her mother’s funeral, Maya isn’t eager to rebuild their relationship—but then Sam offers her a high-paying job that will allow her to escape her grief for a while. On their first business trip, Maya learns that Sam was once a spy—and when he’s taken from their restaurant in Cairo, she’s forced to race around the world to try to get him released.
What started out as a glamorous new job opportunity soon turns dangerous for this grieving young woman, who finds herself racing from Egypt to India to South Korea on her quest to retrieve the one thing that will save her dad from his kidnappers. It all happens quite quickly. Maya accepts a position that seems exciting but rather questionable, then, over dinner with her dad, she takes the news of his career as a spy with a shrug—as if he’d just told her that he’d bought some new shoes that afternoon instead of revealing that he was a secret government agent. And as soon as she knows the truth, she’s forced to leave the restaurant and go on the run.
The action is fast-paced and the settings are striking as Maya’s mission takes her from one fascinating location to another, through crowded city streets and colorful bazaars. The story, however, feels rather messy and confusing. There are so many twists along the way—along with car chases and run-ins with the police and INTERPOL—but viewers never get a chance to figure out what’s going on or which side everyone is really on. And when Maya’s mission is over, they probably won’t feel as though many of those questions have been answered.
Inheritance is definitely an action-packed spy thriller—a film that’s constantly on the move. But it gets so caught up in trying to be the kind of twisting, turning, globe-trotting adventure that keeps readers guessing—and the story gets lost somewhere in the process.
You can go on the run with Maya when Inheritance races into theaters on January 24, 2025.
