Being a mom isn’t easy—and no matter how hard you try to be a good mom, there are always other moms who make you feel like you’re doing it all wrong. And in All the Other Mothers Hate Me by Sarah Harman, an outsider mom bumbles her way through an amateur investigation when a child goes missing.
The story finds former girl group member Florence Grimes searching for answers after one of her 10-year-old son Dylan’s classmates goes missing during a field trip. Alfie Risby is a bully—the rich and entitled only child of rich and entitled parents—and under normal circumstances, Florence wouldn’t really care that he’d gone missing. But Dylan was paired up with Alfie for the field trip, and he ended up coming home with Alfie’s backpack. Fearing that her son is the prime suspect, Florence sets out to search for answers and clear Dylan’s name.
Florence has never been a favorite among the mothers at Dylan’s exclusive private school. She’s young and unruly. She doesn’t dress the way the other moms do. And she couldn’t follow the rules of London society moms if she tried. From her music career to her marriage, everything she touches seems to end in disaster—but while she’s far from the perfect mom, Dylan is her whole world, and she won’t let herself fail him. Florence is, in no uncertain terms, a mess—and readers will often cringe at the choices she makes. But, despite her often cringe-worthy mistakes, Florence’s unwavering love for her child and her desperate need to protect him make her an endearing character nonetheless. She’s impulsive and outspoken and a little self-absorbed, but she’s also real. And it’s hard not to love her for all of her quirks and rough edges.
When Florence recruits another outsider mom to investigate Alfie’s disappearance, the result is, unsurprisingly, haphazard. The women fumble their way through interviews and stakeouts in the most awkwardly amusing ways. It’s all chaotic and messy, suspenseful and humorous. And while you may pick up the book for its title—and its unconventional main character—the investigation will keep you turning pages.
If you’ve ever felt like you’d never fit in with the other moms—only to realize that you wouldn’t really want to—you’ll enjoy the irreverent action and mom humor of All the Other Mothers Hate Me. It’s a clever read with plenty of suspense and a surprising amount of heart.
