Parenting is a big responsibility—and not everyone is up for the task. But when a grieving chef decides to give her unplanned child up for adoption in The Good Parents by author Jessica Huntley, she soon finds herself questioning her decision after getting to know more about the parents-to-be.
The story finds London pastry chef Brittany Young starting over after losing her twin sister and her job within just a few days. When she’s offered the opportunity to work with John and Angela Dalton, a wealthy couple at their home in the French Riviera, she’s eager to leave the painful memories behind for a few years. Soon after she arrives, an unplanned pregnancy threatens to ruin this great opportunity. When her bosses offer to adopt her baby, it seems like the perfect solution—until she begins to notice that not everything at the villa seems normal.
The more time Brittany spends at the villa, the stranger things seem. She did think it was unusual when she was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement before taking the job, but she didn’t give it too much thought at the time. But she soon begins noticing things about her employers that seem strange—like the way that Angela seems confused most of the time or the condescending way that John speaks to her. Brittany has so many questions, but she doesn’t know if she can trust any other member of the staff—because it seems like she’s constantly being watched.
Though the author spends a little too much time developing the character and her situation—focusing on every aspect of Brittany’s relationship with her twin and the situation that led to her death—once Brittany settles into her new life at the villa, the suspense begins to build. It’s the kind of story that will give you chills—and maybe make you feel a little bit paranoid, too. The story will keep you guessing—wondering what’s really going on and who’s involved. And you’ll be eager to keep coming back to find out what will happen to Brittany and her baby—until it all comes together in a satisfying conclusion.
The Good Parents is an eerie and sometimes sinister psychological thriller about power and control and mental health. Though the build-up takes up more space than necessary, the rest of the story is well worth the time and energy that it takes to get through it.
