After dumping her cheating fiancé, Stacey Curtis arrives in a Vermont ski town with no place to sleep but in her car—or in a condo, if she’s able to find an empty one and can sneak in with a set of keys that she found at the bar where she works. One night, after discovering a body with a chainsaw chain wrapped around his neck, she decides that it might be a good idea to find a legitimate place to sleep, so she boards with the local sheriff and his family.
Stacey made the call to 911 about the body and chose to remain anonymous, but someone saw her leave the condo complex on the night the call was made—and now the local homeless man is trying to blackmail her. She just wants to ski and stay out of other people’s business—but that’s not an easy thing to do when others won’t stay out of hers. At least one person wants to make sure that she didn’t see more than just the body—and if she did…well, that wouldn’t be a good thing for Stacey.
I have no interest in skiing, but I absolutely loved Double Black, with its spunky ski diva who’s caught up in a murder mystery that she has no wish to be involved in. Fresh powder isn’t the only thing that will send a chill straight to your heart. Ms. Clinch has the ability to take the norm and twist it into something that’ll scare the pants off you. She adds just enough thrilling scenes to keep the reader from growing numb—and, as a result, you’ll get the heck scared out of you each time.
Stacey is one of those tough-as-nails characters that I love to read about. She stands strong against life’s hard knocks, and she’ll surprise you with her sense of humor while doing it. She faces obstacles with an I-can-handle-this attitude. Even if you’re not a ski bum, you’ll be able to relate to Stacey because her problems are ordinary.
With a puzzling mystery, unusual characters, and a few suspenseful moments, Double Black is one of the best debuts I’ve read in quite sometime. I definitely plan on reaching for the next Ski Diva Mystery by Wendy Clinch, and I suggest that you get in on this new series from the beginning as well.
