I’ve only read one of Jenni Holbrook’s books, but her romantic comedy I Didn’t Hear Anything was so adorable and funny that I immediately added her to my authors-to-look-for list.
Jenni Holbrook grew up in Rochester, New York as an active child who always played near the lake—fishing, swimming, and playing in the mud or catching frogs and fireflies. Once, during a camping trip, her camp counselor decided to put their food in a garbage can to keep the raccoons and other critters out while they went on a canoe excursion. Only she didn’t know it was garbage pick-up day, and when they got back they had no food, much to the amusement of everyone.
For many years, Ms. Holbrook taught dance, then she started Who Dares Wins Publishing with Bob Mayer. Since then, she’s uncovered many talents, including book cover design and building websites from scratch.
Ms. Holbrook is not a collector of anything because she hates clutter, but she does have a lot of pictures, especially of her children doing their sports. She’s a passionate hockey parent with three children playing the sport. Her daughter plays D3 women’s ice hockey; her middle son plays varsity for his high school, and her youngest son plays on a travel league. One year, they went to about 170 hockey games across two countries.
Some of her favorite things include being on the water, sitting by the lake and writing, books, movies, and TV.
On Writing, In Jenni Holbrook’s Own Words
What or who inspires you to write?
I write because I can’t imagine not writing. Everything around me inspires me to write.
Why did you begin writing?
I didn’t always want to be a writer, so I came into it later in life. I love to read and watch movies, so I spent a lot of my free time doing that. One day, at the lake, while watching my kids swim, I took out paper and pen, and I wrote my first book. I just haven’t stopped since then. It was back in the summer of 2003.
Which author inspires you?
My most inspiring author is my business partner, Bob Mayer, and not because he’s my business partner. His lectures, workshops, and books on writing are things I started using before I met him. The Novel Writer’s Toolkit struck so many deep chords in me that, even today, that book is always on my desk, and I always use its lessons. He pushes me to be a better writer without even trying.
Also, Sandra Brown. I have only met her once, for a very brief time, but her books are what made me think I could write one.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I don’t know. I just know that writing makes me feel good.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? And, if so, how did you cure it?
Yes and no. I’ve had short periods of time when nothing seemed to be working. I went back to the beginning and generally found I had gone off track and just needed to remember where I had started.
When is your next book due out, and what’s it about?
I don’t have any books under contract currently. I’m finishing a book titled Legacy of Lies and putting all my energy into Who Dares Wins Publishing and Write it Forward blog and series. Bob and I have some really exciting things coming up in the next few months. It’s an exciting time to be an author.
