My luck with young adult/teen paranormal reads may have finally taken a turn for the better. On a recent trip to Wal-Mart, I decided to treat myself to a new book. I managed to pick the first book in a series—and I found that Lauren Kate’s Fallen is such a fantastic series that it should become the next big thing.
After a tragic fire, Lucinda (Luce) Price finds herself at the Sword & Cross school for disturbed young adults. All her life, she’s been plagued by shadows that only she can see—and they’re always around when something bad happens or is about to happen. She doesn’t understand them, and she stopped talking to her parents about them long ago. It’s what’s landed her in schools such as the Sword & Cross.
On her first day at school, she’s drawn to Daniel Grigori, but he makes it very clear that he wants nothing to do with her—and he goes out of his way to keep it that way. Yet she can’t stay away from Daniel, even when another boy shows that he’s most definitely into her. Daniel is familiar to her, but she can’t figure out why.
In unguarded moments, Daniel shows that he cares for her beyond what seems normal, and Luce is determined to discover his secrets—secrets that are probably best left to the shadows.
Fallen is the first book in a darkly romantic paranormal series with gothic elements—and it’s an absolutely amazing read. Ms. Kate steps outside the mystical box to bring her readers a whole new and extraordinary supernatural saga that hasn’t already been overdone to the point of dullness.
Little by little, the plot’s secrets unfold until you’re given a clearer picture of who Daniel and Luce really are. Despite the fantastical aspects of the romance, it’s portrayed in an entirely realistic way, and you’ll find your heart aching for these two while the creepy portions give you chills. And, better yet, these characters are worthy of your devotion. You won’t find any crybaby heroes or undeserving heroines in Fallen.
If you still love your vampires and werewolves (like me), yet you long for something different (like I do), Fallen is just the thing to feed that craving. I can’t express how excited I am about this extraordinary new series. Please don’t miss it!
