Hum Harbour is the kind of town where everyone is happy and supportive of each other and they hold no secrets—then again, maybe not. On the night of his retirement party, Doc Campbell is supposed to be headed for the Caribbean on his boat. Instead, he ends up dead. Gailynn MacDonald finds him the next morning while out looking for sea glass to make jewelry for her store.
Most of the town seems to think that Doc accidentally caused his own death by drinking too much, running his boat ashore, and banging his head hard enough to kill himself. Gailynn isn’t convinced, so she starts asking questions—questions that someone doesn’t want answered.
The new doctor, Geoff Grant, thinks Gailynn is grasping at straws until he’s confronted with evidence that sheds suspicion on the former doctor’s death. Still, he’s concerned for her safety and urges her to leave the investigation to her brother, Andrew, who is in law enforcement. But Andrew doesn’t seem to be taking it too seriously, so Gailynn keeps searching for the truth on her own.
Gailynn’s pushiness and nosiness could have been annoying, but, somehow, it isn’t. At times she can be so exasperating that you might want to give her a good shake, yet you can’t help but admire her spunkiness and tenaciousness when it comes to searching for the truth—and the predicaments that she gets herself into offer some comedic relief.
Geoff, on the other hand, is the perfect accompaniment to Gailynn. He has the patience and logical thinking to keep her from totally spinning out of control. He’s the rock that Gailynn desperately needs to balance her fixated personality, making him an unassuming hero.
Plenty of extra characters have their own secrets and problems, making all of them suspects at one time or another. All of the different motives make Murder in Hum Harbour a challenging mystery that will keep you guessing and reevaluating right up until the end.
With its colorful characters, intriguing setting, and baffling plot, Murder in Hum Harbour is a delightful mystery with just a hint of romance to keep you smiling. Hum Harbour is a town that you’re definitely going to want to revisit in the future.
