Remember the lovable little dolls that used to fill your playroom with the scents of fruits and flowers and fresh baked goods? The classic childhood favorite and her sweet-smelling friends are back for more kid-friendly animated adventures in their new video release, Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Bitty Mysteries.
Once again taken from Berry Bitty Adventures, the popular TV series for preschool-aged girls, this three-episode collection follows Strawberry Shortcake (voiced by Anna Cummer) and her friends as they set out to conquer their fears and solve some mysteries. This time around, that means helping Orange Blossom (Janyse Jaud) face her fear of the creatures that lurk in the dark, helping Blueberry Muffin (Britt McKillip) find her true self back after getting lost in a book, and organizing a search party to find Strawberry Shortcake’s missing pets.
Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures is a simple animated series. The animation isn’t exactly noteworthy—or even particularly well done. In fact, it’s pretty standard kids’ TV fare, but its splashes of vibrant color and its imaginative imagery still make it fun for young audiences.
Meanwhile, while many of today’s animated kids’ series focus on teaching young viewers some important life lesson, the lessons found in these episodes are simple and understated. Sure, there are messages about things like being true to yourself, overcoming your fears, and not letting your imagination run wild—but they’re not forced or overdone. Instead, the show’s focus is on the cute characters and their unique personalities.
The residents of Berry Bitty City are as distinctive as their names. They’re colorful characters with their own individual style. Each one has her own talents, gifts, and interests—and, when they work together, they can solve any mystery and handle any obstacle that comes their way. Although they don’t always handle things the right way the first time around, they tend to learn a thing or two in the process.
Still, the stories told in Berry Bitty Mysteries aren’t exactly thrilling—nor are they especially memorable. This isn’t the kind of collection that will have you eagerly settling down on the couch with your little one, time and time again, excited to revisit the characters and their fun-filled adventures. But, if nothing else, it’s a cute blast from the past for anyone who collected Strawberry Shortcake and her friends as a little girl. And if you need something to keep your little girl entertained on a rainy day, this sweet, fluffy series is a decent choice.
