In 2017, audiences lived through one murder after another with a sorority girl in Happy Death Day. But while she thought she’d finally closed the loop at the end, it opens back up again in the sequel, Happy Death Day 2U—and now she finds herself in a familiar but much more complicated situation.



Happy Death Day 2U begins the day after Tree (Jessica Rothe) found herself stuck in a deadly time loop until she could solve her own murder. When her boyfriend’s roommate, Ryan (Phi Vu), experiences the same thing, she discovers that it all happened because of a glitchy science project. But when Ryan attempts to fix the issue and close the loop, Tree ends up in a completely different dimension—one where her boyfriend is seeing someone else, her mom is still alive, and she’s once again stuck in an infinite loop.



This thriller sequel sets up another Groundhog Day-style slasher flick, following this fed-up victim as she attempts to find a killer and get her life back to normal. This time, however, there are all kinds of twists to complicate the story—starting with the complicated scientific principles that are apparently at the root of everything. More than just a time-looping thriller, it’s now a dimension-jumping tale about figuring out what’s really important in life.



If you’re thinking that might be a strange way to describe a young adult horror movie, well, you’re right. The premise here has shifted, and instead of trying to solve her own murder, Tree is now trying to help a lab full of science geeks fix their invention, so she can remain in this alternate dimension with her still-living mom. Meanwhile, instead of becoming the victim of a brutal murder day after day, she chooses to kill herself in quirky ways. And that means that the horror here is nearly non-existent for the middle of the movie.



Granted, Rothe’s Tree will still keep audiences entertained. She’s not just the typical sweet, innocent victim; she’s tough and determined, with an amusing edge and a dark sense of humor. And while her story is far more dramatic than it is scary, she keeps it from getting dull and monotonous.



Fans of Happy Death Day will enjoy the references and continuing story. But if you’re excited to watch day after day of murder, mayhem, and mystery, you’ll be disappointed by the drama of this unexpected sequel. So you might want to watch the original over (and over…and over) again.
