Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second
The underwater world of mermaids and their finned friends is often a favorite among little girls who like to dream about magical creatures and faraway places. And in Nixie Makes Waves, the first book in the Mermaids to the Rescue series, author Lisa Ann Scott introduces readers to magical mermaids who are strong and helpful, too.
This undersea adventure introduces the newest members of the Royal Mermaid Rescue Crew. All through her training, Princess Nixie has been looking forward to being paired up with her magical seapony partner to help those in need. But when she’s paired up with Rip, she loses her enthusiasm. Rip may be super-fast and super-smart, but he just isn’t any fun. He knows all of the rules, not only does he follow them perfectly, but he preaches at everyone else about following them, too. And Nixie fears that their great differences will make it impossible for them to work together.
Nixie Makes Waves is a cute adventure for young fans of mermaids. The characters may be magical creatures who are tasked with completing rescue missions in a faraway world, but they also have a lot in common with the average kid. They have their own likes and dislikes, their own personalities, and their own friends and family members. And they struggle with some common issues, too.
In this first book in the series, Nixie tries to figure out how to get along with someone who does things differently. Rip is nothing like Nixie. Though they’ve been assigned to work as partners, they think differently and act differently—and neither one is interested in changing for their partner. But as they set out on their first unauthorized rescue mission, they’re forced to learn about compromise, about working together, and about appreciating people with different abilities.
Admittedly, the setup isn’t especially strong—and moms and dads might notice a lot of holes in the story. But young mermaid-loving readers will enjoy the action and adventure of this easy-going underwater tale. They’ll relate to the characters and their challenges, and they’ll look forward to more adventures with the other members of the Rescue Crew.
If you have young readers who love mermaids, Nixie Makes Waves will take them on an adventure to a magical place while teaching them some important lessons that apply to life above the sea, too. It’s cute and entertaining—and an easy read for bedtime.
