As we get older and more worn out, it’s easy to start sentences with things like, “If I were 20 years younger…” But in Edie, an octogenarian skips her move-in date at the nursing home after she decides that she’s still not too old to set out on a great adventure.
Edie stars Sheila Hancock as 83-year-old Edie, a wife and mother who’s devoted her life to caring for her controlling and sometimes cruel husband, who’s been in a wheelchair since suffering a stroke 30 years ago. After her husband’s death, Edie’s daughter, Nancy (Wendy Morgan), is helping her prepare for a move to a retirement home. But when Edie finds an old postcard from her father, she’s reminded of adventures that she once dreamed of having—and, deciding that it’s never too late, she sets out for Scotland, determined to climb a mountain.
If you’ve ever thought you were too old or too out of shape to follow your dreams, Edie will tell you—in no uncertain terms—that you’re dead wrong. And as she boards the train and begins her adventure, you may doubt her ability to survive the climb, but you’ll want to see her succeed, too.
After Edie arrives in Inverness, her misadventures lead her to hire Jonny (Kevin Guthrie) to prepare her for the climb. And what starts out as a difficult relationship between the reluctant guide and the difficult old woman turns into an unlikely friendship, adding to the heart and humor of Edie’s story of grit and adventure. Guthrie isn’t given a big, powerful role—and some parts of the character’s story still seem unnecessary—but he complements the story well, letting Hancock stand up and shine. Because not only is it a charming story about a determined woman, but it’s a pretty amazing story for the star, too, who took on the role (and the mountain) at 83.
Admittedly, writer/director Simon Hunter can sometimes be a little heavy-handed with his direction, but it’s not hard to see why he’d get so caught up in it. The setting is strikingly beautiful—and the character is so strong and inspiring—that he doesn’t want viewers to miss out on any of it.
Edie is a familiar but beautiful feel-good film—an inspiring story with a lovable star. It’s the kind of movie that will make you want to walk out of the theater and go climb your own mountain.

Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
