Especially in times like these, when grown-up life gets overwhelming and stressful, you might dream about escaping back to the “good old days” of college, when life was fun and simple and carefree. But in I Used to Go Here, one woman finds a whole new perspective when she returns to her alma mater.
I Used to Go Here stars Gillian Jacobs as 30-something writer Kate Conklin. While all of her friends are married and pregnant, Kate is newly single and recently published. But while she has high hopes for her novel, the early numbers just aren’t high enough, and her publisher decides to cancel her book tour. When her favorite college professor asks her to come back to her alma mater for a reading to promote her book, she eagerly returns to campus, where she ends up caught up in the lives of the students who live in her old house.
If you’ve ever felt lost and alone, you’ll relate to Kate’s story. While her friends are grown up and moving on, she lives alone in her Chicago apartment with a box full of wedding invitations that will never be used. Her book’s publication was supposed to make her feel accomplished—but, instead, the unimpressive release makes her feel even more betrayed. The invitation to speak at her old school gives her a chance to return to her roots—and, at the same time, to feel like she’s somebody.
Of course, things don’t go according to the plan, and Kate ends up on a series of comical adventures on campus. She has an unexpected run-in with an old classmate and an awkward night out with her mentor (Jemaine Clement) and his wife. And, constantly locked out of her bed and breakfast, she ends up sleeping on the couch in her old house and befriending the aspiring writers who live there.
Along the way, these old and new relationships remind Kate of the person she was when she still had her whole life ahead of her—and she’s forced to face some uncomfortable realities. But Jacobs handles it all with ease—and with plenty of humor, too. And she’s surrounded by a cast of quirky characters that will take you right back to your own college days.
If you’ve ever wanted to go back again—to relive the “good old days”—you’ll relate to I Used to Go Here. It’s easygoing and entertaining, with a thoughtful story about taking a step back to remember the person you once wanted to be.
