In Sarah Mlynowski’s Whatever After series, a pair of adventurous siblings finds themselves transported into one fairy tale after another. But an evil fairy has taken an interest in big sister Abby, and he pulls her and her friends into another side story in the audio edition of the second special edition release, Abby in Oz.
The story goes on another unexpected adventure with 10-year-old Abby and her three friends. One minute, they’re arguing about a class project, and the next, they’re caught up in a tornado and being whisked away. They find themselves in the land of Oz, but instead of landing on the Wicked Witch and freeing the Munchkins, they just miss her—and Dorothy’s house does, too. So, pooling together their knowledge of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz—and the beloved movie adaptation—they set off down the Yellow Brick Road to fix the story and get themselves home again.
Because The Wizard of Oz isn’t a fairy tale—and because Abby is pulled into the story with her friends and not her little brother, this release (like Abby in Wonderland) takes place outside the main series. But while a few things have changed, it still follows Abby into a beloved story, where her arrival almost instantly wreaks havoc, forcing her to set out to save the day (and the story)—this time, with help from her unsuspecting friends.
As usual, this mishap-filled journey into a classic tale is a fun one. Whether you’ve read the book or you just love the movie adaptation, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a magical tale—and readers of all ages will enjoy meeting the characters in this setting and joining Abby in her quest to make everything right.
Though the imaginative adventures in this series are always entertaining, though, the special editions are missing something: namely, Abby’s little brother, Jonah, who always seems to bring a more exuberant, adventurous spirit. Abby’s friends just aren’t quite as much fun. There tends to be more bickering and more drama when the girls venture into a story together. And while this story does shed some light on how to handle difficult friendships, it’s definitely missing Jonah’s playfulness.
If you enjoy this series of fractured fairy tales, you’ll enjoy getting swept away to Oz with Abby. But while it’s fun to meet the beloved characters and imagine a new twist on the classic story, it’s just not really the same without Jonah’s antics.
