There’s just something about the holiday season that makes us stop to think about where we’ve been…and where we want to be. So in the audio edition of Stuck on You by author Portia MacIntosh, one woman sets out to make some changes in her life—and she’s surprised by where they lead.
The story joins Londoner Sadie on her quest for happiness in the new year. A year ago, her new job as the personal assistant to famous photographer Damian Banks sounded ideal—until she realized that he expected her to do everything. The only good thing about the job has been her ongoing Post-It note conversations with Adam, who uses her desk when she’s not in the office. When she’s offered her dream job, she’s eager to move on—but then Damian invites himself home with her for Christmas, and she just can’t break the news to him.
As you might expect, as Sadie brings Damian home for the holidays, things are incredibly awkward—and not just because everyone thinks that he’s her boyfriend instead of her boss. Damian gets to know a little too much about her life, her family, and her home—something that no one really wants when it comes to their boss. But, thanks to a little holiday magic, once they’re away from the fancy events and the unreasonable demands and Damian’s constant parade of supermodel girlfriends, Sadie realizes that Damian isn’t such a bad guy.
Of course, as is often the case with romantic comedies, much of the tension here is built on one maddening secret that threatens to bring this unexpected friendship—which might have the potential to turn into something more—crashing down. And while it doesn’t seem like such a huge problem, it does hang over the story—until, of course, it comes out and makes a mess of everything.
Still, the characters are lovable in their own way—and Sadie and Damian both grow and change throughout their holiday adventures. And despite its typical chick lit formulas, their story makes for a sweet holiday fairy tale, with its small-town holiday festivities, its adorable awkwardness, and its hints of romance.
This is definitely the time of year for fun and festive chick lit. So if you’re looking for a little bit of brainless entertainment at the end of the day, you’ll enjoy curling up with some hot chocolate (or a glass of wine) and this cute holiday audiobook.
Listen to the review on Shelf Discovery:
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
