El Oso is repetitive, nonsensical, erratic, and silly. And I absolutely love it. Because it’s also fun and catchy. You won’t be able to get these songs out of your head – because they’re simple and repetitive, and they’re just so darn good.
I’m still trying to figure out if the members of Soul Coughing are deep, philosophical geniuses or if they’re just goofy geniuses. But whatever the case, they’re geniuses.
“Circles” pulled me in with its craziness – and its catchiness. After the first time I heard it, I couldn’t stop singing “I don’t need to walk around in circles, walk around in circles, walk around in circles…” (I’ve often had this problem with Cake’s music, too.)
El Oso isn’t just “Circles,” though. It’s so much more. You’ll find upbeat songs that will have you bouncing around the living room (be careful not to make the CD player skip), and you’ll find smooth, bass-y, jazzy numbers like “Maybe I’ll Come Down” – and sometimes you’ll find both in the same song.
There’s no way I could ever single out the best song on this album. It’s one of those albums that I’ll listen to and say, “I love this song!” each time a new song starts. It starts with “Rolling,” a great song to start an album – or a road trip – and it ends with “The Incumbent,” a quiet – and almost hypnotic – fade-out.
These guys experiment with strange sounds and strange beats – and they do it almost flawlessly.
