When I was a kid, I never missed an episode of “The Muppet Show.” I even remember watching it in the hospital when I had my tonsils out. To me, Saturday night was Muppet Night. I loved Animal and Gonzo –- and I entertained my third-grade class with my Swedish Chef impersonation.
I’ve always loved the Muppets –- and I still do. Muppets from Space had me giggling like an eight-year-old. I loved it!
Before I saw Muppets from Space, I thought it would be like the old “Pigs in Space” sketches. But let me set the record straight –- the Muppets never see the inside of a space ship in this movie. The story is about Gonzo -– who feels left out because he’s the only one of his kind. He has no idea what he is or where he came from. One day, however, his breakfast cereal sends him a message (really!) -– to look to the sky for his answers. That night, while Gonzo’s sitting up on the roof, studying the sky, a pair of cosmic fish speak to him and tell him that he’s really an alien –- and that his family is coming for him.
Problems arise, however, when a secret government agency finds out about Gonzo’s heritage –- and they kidnap him for more information. Then it’s up to Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy, and even Pepe the Prawn to rescue their extraterrestrial friend.
Muppets from Space is a little of everything. It’s got all of the old favorite Muppets (like Kermit and Piggy and all of Electric Mayhem), and it’s got a few new favorites (like Pepe the Prawn, my husband’s personal favorite). It’s part spy film (complete with Bunsen’s Bond-like gadgets) and part college slacker comedy. Throw in a bunch of 70s music, a Hulk Hogan cameo, and a load of typical Muppet one-liners, and you get an hour and a half of serious laughs. I loved it so much that I’ve added it to my DVDs to Buy list.
