Even though this story has been turned into a movie many times before (under titles of Valmont, Dangerous Liaisons, even Les Liasons Dangereuse, where it originates from) Cruel Intentions is the most successful version of them all.
Cruel Intentions is a scandalous story involving drugs, deceit, sex, passion, and above all… love. It’s the tale of Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) and his bet with his step-sister, Kathryn Merteuil (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) -– and how it turns him from the evil, ruthless Sebastian we all love to hate into a love-sick young man. The action from Ryan Phillippe is superb to the very end. As they say, “Evil shouldn’t look this good.” With Phillppe behind Sebastian’s actions, that line is especially appropriate.
But wait.. “The course of love never did run smoothly.” Enter the bet, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Sebastian’s deal with Kathryn is that he can get Annette into bed with him -– or else he gives his sister his 1950s Jaguar… If he wins, Kathryn gives in to his charms –- yet another score on his male ego. With this bet an unexpected turn happens for Sebastain. He falls in love.
There’s added magic from the fact that Witherspoon and Phillippe are actually married in life. It gives an extra spark to the way their characters interact. The scenes with Valmont and Mertruil (Phillippe & Gellar) are tense as well as exciting to watch these two ruin and destroy the lives of innocent people.
Take home this fabulous title today. If you’ve got that little bit of extra time in your evening, be sure to watch some exclusive deleted scenes from the DVD with Valmont and Mertruil. You won’t be disappointed.
