This book is part devotional, part memoir, part theological discussion, part
reflection on the world, and part short story based on the biblical story of
Joseph.
Madeleine LEngle, best known for her Newbery Award-winning childrens
book A Wrinkle in Time, writes about the world from the starting point
of the story of Joseph. Its just fun to see LEngles elasticity
with her thoughts and with the language in this book. A glimpse into the way
LEngles Episcopalian mind worksjumping from Joseph to quantum
mechanics in the seamless space of a paragraph. From the ancient world of Egypt
and Canaan to present-day America and back. From ancient faith in El to current
Christianity.
LEngle, who recently had lost her husband of many years at the time of
writing this book, can relate thoughtfully to Joseph, who lost his family for
a time. She writes with honesty, pathos, and humor in this book that is well
worth the time. If youre not interested in spirituality, this may not
be the right book for you, but if you are, you will most likely find some insight
in this wise womans writings.
