After the last encounter with Richard and Kahlan, the stakes are doubled. Kahlan lies badly injured after banishing the Chimes (that story’s told in a previous tale). Richard decides enough is enough: he will no longer lead the people of the New World against Emperor Jagang. Sister Nicci, a Sister of the Dark (one of Richard’s former teachers) turns up at Richard and Kahlan’s hidden place and puts Kahlan under a spell which links the women’s lives together. If one dies, then so does the other. Much against Kahlan’s wishes, the spell causes Richard to allow Nicci to take him hostage, sending him deep into the heart of the enemy. With Richard gone, Kahlan throws herself into the role of leading the D’Haran forces against Jagang’s mighty army.
Meanwhile, tormented Nicci, who captured Richard for her own reasons, starts to live as husband and wife with him, showing him the true meaning of life without friends and magic. Kahlan and Cara, the Lord Rahl’s personal Mord-Sith bodyguard, lead the D’Haran forces, along with Richard’s followers and the Lord Rahl himself, to a climactic ending.
I’m telling you, this book is one of the reasons I failed my mathematics exam in high school. This is the one that got me started on the series. When I first got my hands on this book, I had no idea it was part of a series, so I read this one first even though it is book six. After a twenty-four hour reading stint I was in no fit state to sit my exam and fell asleep during the test…but was it worth it, was it really worth having to re-sit a year later? You bet it was!
You can read a book, and be satisfied with it. However this book can drive you completely insane to get your hands on the next book. This is the book you can’t put down. If you’re a die hard, and I mean Die Hard fan for fantasy and magic, this is your book. Ask any fan which book they enjoyed the most, and the answer will be Faith of the Fallen. I’ve laughed, cried and been completely horrified while reading this breathtaking masterpiece.
It’s spellbinding. You won’t find a fantasy book that can live up to the hype that this one can. So before I end and hungrily read the next book in the series, I need to ask… Mr. Goodkind. When are you going to make these amazing books into films?
