Prepare to be entertained.
From the first appearance to the last, you won’t be able to take your eyes off Johnny Depp. He plays the role of Captain Jack Sparrow so well you’d think he was born to piracy. And though Depp has played some very curious characters in his career, I’d say that as Captain Sparrow, he takes the cake. Everything from his dreamy eyes and outrageously charming smile — now decorated with gold caps — to his bizarre Blackbeard look-alike appearance and downright witty lines, Depp is in his element and fits the role perfectly. You will not be disappointed with his performance.
Nor will you be disappointed in the team of actors/actresses that support him in this film.
Orlando Bloom plays the hero, Will, who was rescued at sea when he was just a lad. Will’s got something the captain and crew of the Black Pearl need…
Look closely at this handsome gent, and you’re sure to recognize that face — think of shoulder-length blonde hair, Middle Earth, and elves, and you’ll see what I mean (here’s another hint). But one doesn’t have to search for his talent. Bloom wears it as well as co-actor, Depp. Bloom is heartwarmingly romantic and sexy in his simplicity. Yet a streak of dangerousness surrounds him when he wields a sword, and you won’t want to miss a moment of it.
Keira Knightley is Elizabeth, the heroine who has been in love with Will since his rescue. But her father has set his sights a bit higher and constantly pushes her toward a high-ranking official in the king’s army. She’s feisty and bold and, as is wont with women in that era, manages to faint at the most opportune times. But you’ll forgive her — if your corset was laced that tightly, you’d faint too! She’s pretty and smart — and a good actress. You’ll find yourself rooting for her and the hero to find each other despite all obstacles in their way.
So here’s the story: Captain Sparrow saves Elizabeth from drowning when she faints and falls off the side of the castle and into the ocean. But when it’s discovered that he’s a pirate, he’s imprisoned. Meanwhile, the ghost ship, the Black Pearl, makes it way into the harbor and attacks. What the ghost ship actually comes for is not a hostage, but the medallion Elizabeth wears — a medallion she took off young Will so many years before, when he was rescued. The pirates take Elizabeth with them as they retreat to the ship and quickly leave the harbor. Captain Sparrow is the only one who knows where the Black Pearl is headed. Will is crazy with worry over Elizabeth. He’ll do anything to save her — even if that means helping Sparrow escape and steal a ship.
All in all, the film is really good. There’s humor, there’s adventure, there’s love and loyalty, and then there’s the code…or at least the guidelines. One thing is certain — one ride on the Black Pearl will never be enough.
