Janeane Garofalo has always been type-cast as the loud, obnoxious, cynical sidekick—the friend of the cutesy female lead in the romantic comedy. I’ve always loved her because she gives frilly chick flicks a little bit of “yeah, right” reality. She always plays the character who says the “oh, please!” that I’m often feeling.
She’s the reason why I love The Matchmaker (well, her and the gorgeous Irish scenery). To me, she seems to fit just perfectly as the loud, cynical female lead. Garofalo plays Marcy Tizard, a staff member for a Boston politician who sends her to Ireland to find his roots — and a few extra votes. Marcy ends up in a tiny village in the middle of their annual matchmaking festival. And while she can find plenty of prospective husbands (including the matchmakers’ favorite, Sean, an equally cynical ex-journalist who, of course, drives her crazy) — but she can’t find any of the senator’s family.
Garofalo is loudly and cynically wonderful at Marcy — the woman who stands out in a town full of the kind of cute, love-sick girls who would normally star in a romantic comedy. And David O’Hara is boyishly adorable as Sean. The Matchmaker is a cute, funny, cynical romantic comedy that’s worth watching every once in a while — to cleanse your film-watching palate after you’ve seen a few too many sappy chick flicks.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
