This disc contains fourteen tracks, eight of which
were unreleased when the compilation was produced in 1995.
Recorded live
at the Rainbow Theatre in London in January of 1973, this was one of Clapton’s first
concerts after a two-year hiatus. Joined by Pete Townsend, Ron Wood and Steve Winwood,
this combo of rock and roll masters blew the roof off the place.
The
disc opens with “Layla,” featuring stunning guitar solos by Clapton. “Bottle of Red
Wine” rocks with a great beat and outstanding vocal harmonies.
Most of
the tracks are upbeat, but my favorite is the lyrical and tender “Bell Bottom Blues,”
which inevitably has me singing at the top of my lungs, eyes closed, thinking that I
sound really good, when in reality my neighbors are probably cringing. “Let it Rain” has
the same unfortunate effect on me.
“Key to the Highway” features the
sweet, bluesy stylings of Winwood on keys and ends with an incredible
jam.
This is masterful, vintage rock; certain to liven any party, lighten
any road trip, or help shake-off a long day.
