Despite all the
horrible things I heard about this movie, I still tried to keep an open mind. I mean, it
has actors like Gary Oldman and William Hurt in it—and it’s based on a classic TV show.
I doubted that the movie could be as huge a disaster as others had
said.
But I was wrong.
In theory, it’s a good movie. It’s
the year 2058, and the Robinson family has spent the last three years preparing for an
important mission to a far-away planet. But their mission is sabotaged by Dr. Zachary
Smith (Oldman), and the Robinsons and their pilot, Major Don West (Matt LeBlanc) find
themselves lost in space (and time), trying to find their way back
home.
It’s quite obvious that this was no cheap movie to make. The
well-known cast, the over-the-top special effects… Unfortunately, there apparently
wasn’t anything left in the budget for a good team of writers—and, as a result, you end
up with a pretty weak story and lines like “I don’t like the sound of that sound.”
To make things worse, Heather Graham (who plays the eldest Robinson
child), is…well, she’s Heather Graham. And Matt LeBlanc…well, it’s a good thing that he
got that contract for his own TV show—because after seeing this, I’m afraid that I have
to conclude that he’ll never be able to disconnect himself from Joey
Tribbiani.
If you really want to see Lost in Space, I recommend
watching it with the sound off—then you can see the cool effects and forget about the
horrible writing.
