Every day is a roller skating party for me since I
picked up a copy of The Immaculate Collection. This album has all the classic
Madonna songs that I used to skate to—zipping along in my white skates with the fuzzy
blue and white pom-poms, my hair pulled up in a long ponytail on the side of my head, my
arms armored in fluorescent plastic bracelets. “Holiday” is there—so are “Lucky Star”
and “Into the Groove.” (“Like a Virgin” is there, too, but that was on the school’s list
of songs that weren’t allowed at skating parties.) And every time I hear “Crazy for
You,” I still feel the slightest twinge of disappointment, thinking of all those “Couples
Only” skates when I sat on the outskirts with my friends, gossiping about the couples
skating hand-in-hand around the rink.
Madonna has reinvented herself over
and over again throughout the years, and while I always seem to like just about any
single she releases, there will always be a special place in my heart for her earliest
hits. The Immaculate Collection is the perfect compilation for those (like me)
who always loved the classic Madonna songs of the 80s—but wouldn’t really consider
themselves die-hard Madonna fans (you know…the kind of fans who own her entire
collection). Each listener will have his or her own preferences—for instance, I would
have preferred to stick with fun, pop-y songs (I’d take out “Justify My Love” and replace
it with “Dress You Up”). But, in general, The Immaculate Collection is an
excellent collection of roller-skating-party-worthy early Madonna
songs.
Every child of the 80s should own a copy of The Immaculate
Collection (and at least one Molly Ringwald movie).

She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
