John Mayer is
that quiet, mysterious cute-but-a-little-geeky guy who sat in the back row in English
class, writing poetry. He’s the guy that you secretly had a little crush on, but you
never dared to talk to him—and he always had a secret crush on you, too, but instead of
asking you out, he wrote volumes of deep, passionate poetry about how he didn’t dare to
talk to you. He sat at home on Friday nights, strumming his guitar—and just look where
it got him.
Room for Squares is an album full of love and longing
and, in John’s own words, “quarter-life crisis.” It’s about relationships gone
surprisingly well (“City Love”), relationships gone bad (“My Stupid Mouth”), and
relationships yet to come (“Love Song for No One”). It’s about longing for the Good Old
Days (“83”), and it’s about getting out and daring to live life (“Great Indoors”).
If you like John’s singles, “No Such Thing” and “Your Body is a
Wonderland,” there’s no reason to be hesitant about buying the album. You won’t be in
for any big surprises. Room for Squares is more of the same smooth, relaxing
sound with lyrics that will make you stop and pay attention. His songs are sweet and
thoughtful—and after just one listen, you’ll wish you’d tried a little harder with that
quiet guy in English class.
