Born in
Arkansas and raised in Michigan, Al Green started off singing gospel with a family
quartet. Green’s vocals are passionate and powerful with an effortlessly-executed range,
guaranteed to make your jaw drop. Backed by The Royal Horns, The New Memphis Strings and
some rich background vocals, this album is packed with big sound and amazing
talent.
The disc opens with the title track, a swinging ditty featuring
some great horn stylings and an incredible flute solo. “My Problem Is You” is slow,
smoky, sweet and sexy, laced with stunning piano and guitar solos. In “I’d Still Choose
You” Green reminds me a bit of Stevie Wonder. This track is more upbeat with sweet,
crooning background vocals. “I’ve Been Thinkin’ `Bout You” yanked me off the sofa and
had me dancing from the first note.
The Royal Horns are truly
mesmerizing and they shine throughout the disc, but especially on the final track, “Too
Many.”
If you’re a fan of R & B, I can guarantee you will love this
album.
