Just like the title
says, this compilation is the cream of an abundant crop of timeless rock and roll albums
produced throughout the 1980s by this brilliant singer/songwriter and his multi-talented
band.
It opens with the classic and bittersweet “Alison.” This is
followed by “Watching the Detectives.” There are too many favorites to name on this
disc, including “Pump it Up,” “Radio Radio,” “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and
Understanding,” “Oliver’s Army,” “Accidents Will Happen,” and the catchy “Every Day I
Write the Book.”
Costello’s vocals are outstanding, the lyrics are
colorful and thought-provoking, the instrumentals are excellent, with a strapping rhythm
section, and almost every track here is upbeat.
This collection delivers
some great party music. It’s extremely versatile, neither too hard nor too soft. If
you’re a fan of Elvis Costello, this disc is absolutely guaranteed to become a fast
favorite in your collection.
