Players: 2-6
Playing Time: varies
When I
was growing up, my family used to go camping. A lot. We’d go weeks at a time with no
television, no video games, no movies. One of the ways we’d keep ourselves entertained
was by playing lots of games. And one of our favorites was Mille
Bornes.
Mille Bornes (French for “1000 miles”) is a classic card game
that’s still fun today. The object of the game is to be the first player to complete a
1,000-mile trip. This is done by collecting mile cards (in increments of 25, 50, 75,
100, and 200 miles). What make the game interesting, though, are the Hazard cards—if you
get one of these, you can’t rack up any more mileage until you obtain a card that fixes
that Hazard.
The game set comes with four types of cards: Mile Cards,
Hazard Cards, Remedy Cards, and Safety Cards. The Mile Cards are what you need to
complete your trip. Every time you play one, you bring yourself closer to your goal of
1,000 miles. Hazard Cards are played in order to stall your opponents—you can give them
anything from a red light to a flat tire to an accident. If one of your opponents stalls
you with a Hazard Card, you must get either a remedy card (a green light, a full tire,
etc.) or a Safety Card (which gives you immunity from a specific Hazard throughout the
hand) before you can get moving again.
Mille Bornes is right up there with
UNO as one of my
favorite card games of all time. It’s timeless, and can get very competitive—anyone
who’s played it knows how vicious players can get with their Hazard Cards. A Collector’s
Edition of the game is now available, so now might be a good time to pick up a copy of
this great game if you don’t already have it in your closet.
