This is a magnificent compilation of classics performed by two of the most talented jazz artists of the 1950s.
The catchy opening track, “Can’t We Be Friends,” features some exquisitely powerful trumpet stylings by Armstrong. Though every single song on this disc is truly sublime, “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’,” “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” “I Won’t Dance” and “Under a Blanket of Blue” have the most outstanding vocal harmonies. And the vocals are what really stand out here. There is a gorgeous interpretation of “Summertime” included as well.
Armstrong’s gravelly vocals combined with Fitzgerald’s velvety sound make for a delightfully synergistic mix. This disc is the musical equivalent of a fully-loaded ice cream sundae: cold, creamy, warm, decadently-sweet and crunchy with a cherry on top.
Jazz ‘Round Midnight is a marvelously sultry, romantic mix with gorgeous musicianship, sweet lyrics and lovely vocals. If you’re a jazz fan, you simply can’t go wrong with this one.
