This is an absolute masterpiece of gorgeously-executed, wild and saxy jazz from the son of self-taught saxophone great, Dewey Redman. Every track on this CD is original and many are very likely to end up classics.
Redman plays tenor, alto and soprano saxophones and several tracks here feature mixes with him playing all three at once. He is superbly backed by Aaron Goldberg on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Still, Redman generously shares the spotlight with his band and the different tracks included here showcase the talents of each individual artist.
“Leap of Faith,” featuring guest, Mark Turner (on tenor), is a gorgeous fusion of styles and easily one of my favorite tracks on this disc. “Balance,” is a peaceful tune, with a nice tropical feel and a strong bass line. “Stoic Revolutions” features some exquisite piano stylings by Goldberg. “Suspended Emanations” has some lovely bass work by Rogers. “Twilight and Beyond” is deliciously sultry. The diversity of range in this one makes you feel like there’s a baritone sax sneaking in there somewhere.
Beyond has quickly become a new favorite in my collection. It is difficult not to love this album, rich with stunning musicianship and complex riffs that demonstrate beautifully what Redman has to offer the world of jazz.
