This is one big sultry, sprawling piece of work by this multi-talented artist, joined by an impressive list of guests.
It opens with the title track – a lazy, romantic piece with stellar vocals and garnished with the delightfully smooth rap of Ludcris. This one has a sort of 70s feel to it. It’s followed by “Warm Bed,” a cozy song with a smooth, catchy beat. Next up is “DJ Play a Love Song.” This is another sweet one, beautifully laced with the rap stylings of Twista. “Love Changes” is a balmy duet featuring the buttery vocals of Mary J. Blige. In “Extravaganza” Foxx is joined by one of my favorite artists, Kanye West. This one has a great beat and some clever, amusing lyrics. The last two tracks “Heaven” and “Wish You Were Here,” are a bit less playful than the rest of the disc, but both pieces are tender and engaging.
There really isn’t a bad tune on this album. The sound is gentle without being lethargic. It’s the kind of music that encourages the listener to either kick back and chill or stand up and sway. There’s a good deal of fine musicianship here, but vocals are by far the best part of Unpredictable.
