River in Reverse is a genius collaboration by these two brilliant musicians, joined by the Attractions and the Crescent City Horns. This gorgeous piece of work was produced in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and is dedicated by Costello “with respect to the return of NOLA.”
“On Your Way Down” written by Toussaint and sung by Costello is a perfect opener with some truly delightful lyrics. “Nearer to You” is sweet and romantic. “Tears, Tears and More Tears” is remarkably upbeat – considering the title – with magnificent vocals. “Who’s Gonna Help a Brother Get Further” is very danceable with some absolutely wailing trumpet solos. The title track, according to the liner notes, was both written and first performed on September 24, 2005 at a “Parting the Waters” benefit concert in New York. This is a sweet track with thoughtful lyrics. “Freedom for the Stallion” with its rich, powerful vocals has a gospel feel. “International Echo” is bluesy with a great beat, sweet piano, a nice deep bass line and some delightful horn stylings. “Six Fingered Man” makes a soulful finale that perfectly showcases all the remarkable talent that participated in this project.
Though the inspiration here was hardly cheerful, everything is rendered with such a perfect balance of emotion and strength that it’s cathartic. And catharsis is surely the essence of any fine art.
