Concatenations features some extremely unique sounds, rich with exotic, colorful, exquisitely-rendered musicianship. Most tracks are instrumental and a good number of the vocals included are spoken.
The disc opens with “Out of Hand” featuring the spoken vocals of Fiery Church Lady (a truly delightful character) and backed by some wailing guitar riffs. This is my favorite track. “Whitewater” is all instrumental and the pace changes throughout in an engaging way. Next is “Too Clever by Half” a creative composition in three parts. “Dry Land” is a soothing instrumental featuring some very nice, sitar and lap steel stylings.
“She Had to Go Live With the Lizards” is an absolute gem. It opens up with a combination of spoken vocals and singing. They almost make it sound like living with the lizards is a bad thing, though I can imagine worse roommates.
The somber “Betrayal” is followed by “Put Out the Cat,” a fiery jam. The final track, “Columbia Dam” is stellar, with some gorgeous flute work by Beth Heidelberg.
The haunting, enchanting quality to this disc would most definitely complement your Halloween party. If you’re in the mood for something different, be sure to check it out.
